Commercial Paving for the greater Chicagoland and Northwest Indiana Area!
A story has been circulating for decades that the only two cars registered in the state of Ohio in 1895 crashed into each other, making it the earliest automobile accident involving more than one vehicle in the United States. Most historians consider the story an urban myth, but it does raise an interesting point. Early roads were not designed to be used by multiple vehicles at the same time; as such, people saw little need for traffic signs and other safety measures. As the number
of trucks and cars on American roads grew, it became obvious that safety needed to be given more attention. Think about the number and variety of traffic signs you encounter every day, then try to imagine how dangerous and chaotic driving would be without them.
The types, placement, and number of traffic signs you might need will depend primarily on the nature of your pavement. Do you need traffic signs for your gated community, a busy parking lot, or a college campus? Are your main areas of concern busy intersections, speeding drivers, unsupervised children, illegally parked cars, or other issues? At Black Hawk Paving, we understand the types of signs needed for different pavements to address specific issues. However, we have found that several signs are universally beneficial.
Whether the location is a large campus, a gated community, or a parking lot, we typically recommend all or some of the following signs.
• Speed limit signs remind drivers that they need to slow down. This can help keep pedestrians, other drivers, and cyclists safer.
• Stop signs force drivers to bring their vehicles to a complete stop before exiting a parking lot or private drive, when crossing another street or travel aisle, or before entering a pedestrian crosswalk.
• Yield signs are similar to stop signs, but drivers do not need to come to a complete stop before continuing. Yield signs provide clear guidance on which vehicle has the right of way.
• Warning signs convey information about areas in which drivers need to be especially vigilant. Some examples include signs warning of a speed bump or crosswalk ahead, signs notifying drivers that they are entering or exiting a school zone, and signs identifying
accessible parking spaces, tow-away zones, and time-limited parking spaces. Signs can also warn of dangerous curves ahead, merging traffic, or other issues that could surprise drivers.
• Directional signs help drivers navigate parking lots and streets safely. One-way and do-not-enter signs can help prevent head-on collisions, and signs indicating mandatory turns can also reduce collisions. Signs can also provide guidance to drivers seeking the location of a specific building or entrance, including the offices of the HOA, an accessible entrance, or the administration building.
• Signs to satisfy legal requirements may be mandatory under local or federal regulations. These include signs to denote handicapped parking spaces, including signs to identify which ones are van-accessible. They may also include signs to identify fire lanes, bus stops, loading zones, playgrounds, and low clearances.
As you can see, there are many different types of signs that could be installed, but you likely only need a few of them.
