Despite its relatively rural location, Channahon is a thriving community of more than 13,000 people. The population growth and the arrival of new businesses have been fueled, at least in part, by the town’s proximity to two interstate highways. Channahon gets its name from the Potawatomi, who were the only inhabitants in the area when settlers began arriving in 1832. The name means meeting of the waters, a reference to where the Kankakee and Des Plaines rivers meet to form the Illinois River. The construction of the I & M Canal, which is fed by the DuPage River, allowed even
more waters to meet. Myrvin Benjamin laid out the village along the canal where the DuPage, Kankakee, and Des Plaines rivers intersected. Initially, the village was named DuPage, but it became Swifton in 1840 in honor of the president of the I & M Canal’s board. Although the farming community had held a corporate charter, it was discarded in 1908, allegedly because a motorist threatened a lawsuit because a bridge failure sent their vehicle plummeting into the DuPage River. At the time, the population of Channahon was approximately 200.
Channahon was incorporated as a village in 1962. During the 1970s, the village began to grow substantially, attracting industrial plants, warehouses and distribution centers, and new residents. In 1980, Channahon had a population of 3,788, but in 2010, the population had grown to 12,560.
