Commercial Paving for the greater Chicagoland and Northwest Indiana Area!
Although it is easy to assume that paved, marked, and signed highways have existed in the United States since the 1800s, the truth is a bit more complex. Even in 1930, once drivers left a major city, they were more likely to find themselves on dirt roads that were often muddy, rutted, and treacherous. Chicago pavement markings were impossible on those road surfaces, and signs were few, far between, and frequently inaccurate. As early as 1917, a few cities began experimenting with
painted centerlines and other street markings, but efforts were uncoordinated and inconsistent. Efforts to standardize pavement markings began during the 1950s, but it was not until the 1970s that paint colors, line styles, and other aspects of pavement markings became more uniform.
Whether they are applied to parking lot pavements, high-speed highways, or city streets, the primary function of pavement markings is to enhance safety. Centerlines help prevent head-on collisions, lane markers help drivers keep their vehicles within their designated areas, crosswalks help protect pedestrians while they are crossing a street or travel aisle, edge lines warn drivers of where the side of the pavement
is, bike lane markings help prevent vehicle intrusions, and traffic arrows convey information to drivers about the path of travel. Some pavement markings can be mainly informational, including the markings that designate ADA-compliant parking spaces, no-parking areas, and fire lanes.
The interval will depend on information that is specific to your pavement. The type of paint, the average number of vehicles that drive across your markings during a specified period, the condition of the pavement, the type of traffic that the pavement receives, and the damage inflicted by automotive fluids, snowplows, and corrosive chemicals can all affect how frequently you will need to repaint your pavement markings. However, just to give you a rough
idea, pavement markings in Chicago applied using water-based paints will typically need to be repainted about every two years. Keep in mind, though, that your pavement could need to be repainted less often or more frequently.
