What Is Asphalt Milling?

Large scale asphalt milling involves the use of a milling machine to grind away the existing pavement. These machines can be precisely calibrated to remove the pavement to a specific depth. When the procedure is to be followed by an asphalt paving overlay, the depth is normally between two and three inches, but the machines are capable of removing the entire depth of the pavement as well as the base layers if the foundation needs to be strengthened or repaired.

What Is an Asphalt Paving Overlay?

An overlay is a layer of asphalt that is placed on top of an existing pavement after the pavement has been milled. If desired, asphalt fabric may be installed prior to placing the new asphalt. Hot asphalt will be placed so that the elevation of the pavement will be the same as it was when it was originally constructed. This allows gutters, curbs, transitions, drain covers, and other features to be retained at their correct heights. As a result, the resurfaced pavement will function and look so much like a new one that most people who are not paving professionals will assume that you had your pavement rebuilt.
