No matter how well a hot crack sealing contractor constructs an asphalt pavement, cracks will eventually develop. Much like an unrepaired roof leak can result in damage that leads to the collapse of the entire structure, unrepaired cracks can lead to the failure of your entire pavement.
There are many potential causes of cracks in asphalt pavements. One of the most common causes is the pavement’s exposure to ultraviolet radiation. The UV rays emitted by the sun make asphalt pavement dry and
brittle, particularly if the pavement is not protected by sealcoating. Another common cause is ground heave; freezing temperatures can force the soil upwards, and the problem can be intensified if there is any moisture trapped under the pavement. Since asphalt pavements are engineered to support vehicles of certain weights and numbers, allowing heavier or more vehicles on the pavement than it was designed to support can cause cracks to develop. Other potential causes include the
development of an instability in the underlying soil, water penetration from clogged gutters or drains, or issues with the asphalt mix or its installation.
Hot crack sealing is a procedure that uses a polymeric sealant material that is applied while it is hot. The sealant remains flexible, so it does not become dislodged when the pavement expands or contracts. The results are highly effective, and the repair can often last for several years. Although cold-pour sealants exist, they are usually reserved for small or shallow cracks, residential pavements, or as a temporary measure in an emergency situation.
Successful crack sealing and routing requires proper preparation. The sealant cannot bond to the walls of the crack if the pavement inside the void is damp or dirty. The bond will also be stronger if the walls are relatively smooth and uniform, and routing is an effective, fast method for preparing the walls of the crack for the sealant. Routing can also be used to enlarge an area within the void to serve as a reservoir for the sealant or to allow room for the sealant to expand and contract. Routing can improve success rates by as much as 40%, and the longevity of the repair can be as much as three times the longevity of a similar crack that was not routed.
