Asphalt Paving: What Is the Recommended Thickness?

When you need to have a modern parking lot, roadway, or other pavement constructed, asphalt paving is typically an ideal material for most surfaces that will be used by pedestrians, cyclists, or vehicles. Asphalt is economical, durable, and attractive, and it can be installed and repaired quickly. A long-lived pavement that does not require constant repairs will require careful engineering and a high-quality installation that conforms to the engineering specifications. One critical part of the design specifications is the calculation of the thickness of the asphalt. If the asphalt layers are too thin, the pavement will be more likely to develop significant cracks and other damage patterns within a relatively short time. However, making the layers too thick is a waste of your money.

How Do Contractors Know How Thick Paving Should Be?

One of the first questions an asphalt contractor will ask you will concern your planned usage of the pavement. As you might expect, pavements that will receive a high volume of traffic or heavy loads will need to be stronger than the driveway at a suburban home. After evaluating the soil and drainage at the site, the asphalt paving company will determine whether to place the asphalt layers on top of an aggregate base or directly on top of the soil. This decision is critical because it can affect the total asphalt thickness required to provide the pavement strength desired. Another important decision is the selection of the asphalt mix. There are several different mix types, and the thickness of the layers can be affected by the maximum size of the aggregates included in the mix.

Asphalt Paving : What is the Recommended Thickness

Is It Possible to Provide a Rough Estimate of Asphalt Paving Thickness for Different Pavement Uses?

Depending on the pavement’s use, your asphalt contractor may recommend a thickness of as little as two inches or as much as eight inches. In certain rare cases, the recommended thickness could be as much as 10 inches. Listed below are the typical recommendations for selected residential and Chicago commercial paving projects.

• Parking lots that serve both passenger vehicles and trucks should have an asphalt thickness of at least four inches.
• Parking lots that serve primarily heavy trucks should have an aggregate base of at least three inches, topped by at least six inches of asphalt.
• Residential driveways typically have between two and three inches of asphalt over six inches of aggregate.
• Commercial driveways can often have a minimum of three to four inches of asphalt over an aggregate base of at least eight inches.
• Walkways and trails that are only used by pedestrians or bicyclists usually have an asphalt thickness between three and five inches if constructed without an aggregate base. If an aggregate base is installed, the thickness of the asphalt could be as little as two or three inches.
• Roadways can have an asphalt thickness of as little as four inches or as much as 12 inches. It all depends on the type of street or highway, the loads it will bear, and whether the asphalt is applied over an aggregate base.
Asphalt overlays are normally less than three inches in depth, especially if they are installed over a concrete pavement. If installed as part of asphalt milling and pavement resurfacing, the thickness of the asphalt overlay could be equal to the pavement’s original depth.
