Although asphalt pavements are strong, flexible, and durable, they can need occasional repairs. Sometimes, the repair requires the removal of all or part of the existing asphalt. One of the fastest, most cost-effective methods for removing asphalt pavement is also one of the least well-known to the average property owner or manager. In basic terms, asphalt milling in Chicago is a method of grinding away the pavement.
Milling is a versatile technique that has many applications. It is often used to remove the proper depth of asphalt to prepare a pavement for an overlay, to refine transitions between pavements, to correct drainage issues, and to repair asphalt pavements that have been damaged by fire. Milling machines can create the rumble strips found on many asphalt highways and shoulders. Milling is also commonly used to provide access to the foundation so that the
contractor can repair the base and subbase. In addition, the procedure can be used to completely remove an entire pavement and its foundation materials.
Due to its versatility, Chicago asphalt milling can provide many benefits. Here are just a few of them.
1. Milling minimizes the disruption to traffic; most milled surfaces can be reopened as soon as the milling process ends.
2. Existing curb reveals, gutters, manhole covers, and drainage grates can be retained at their proper elevations.
3. Adjustments to the pavement’s grade and slope are often possible, or the grade and slope can be retained.
4. The procedure can be repeated as often as needed on the same area.
5. Surface imperfections can be removed to improve the pavement’s appearance.
6. Traditional remove-and-replace methods often take longer to complete, resulting in greater inconvenience to drivers and potentially causing significant disruption to traffic.
7. Because the procedure produces particles that can be fully recycled, milling is environmentally friendly. The milled particles can be taken to an asphalt plant to produce more asphalt pavement, reducing the plant’s carbon footprint as well as the demand for virgin materials.
8. Due to the ability to calibrate milling and grinding machines to extremely accurate settings, the depth of the pavement removed can be precisely controlled. Depending on the machine, the procedure could remove as little as half an inch of pavement, the full depth of the pavement, or anything in between.
9. Milling and grinding is typically less expensive than other traditional methods for removing asphalt pavements.
